The Neoliberal Attack on Unions: New Zealand

Promoting the growth of unemployment in New Zealand

This thought-provoking documentary explores the social consequences of the 1980s coup by the Reserve Bank supported Right-wing faction which emerged from within New Zealand's Labour Party after the 1984 election.

Taking as its starting point the public's post-Depression consensus that New Zealand's economic policy should focus on achieving full employment, the documentary explores how this was overturned by the government to serve the purposes of the emerging Business Roundtable.

Its perspective focuses on the negative effects of so-called 'Rogernomics' on New Zealand society as a whole as its newly created poor underclass was created. These policies continue to be entrenched to the present day, as do the social consequences.
